5R Method

Definition

A strategy often used during application rationalization to determine the best approach for managing an organization's applications. The 5Rs stand for Retire, Replace, Rehost, Re-platform, and Refactor. Each strategy provides unique benefits, from removing old and unsupported applications (Retire), using new solutions with enhanced features (Replace), moving to a different physical, virtual or cloud location (Rehost), changing the underlying platform (Re-platform), to modifying application code without changing its external behavior (Refactor).
